Parker, who became CEO of the airline in 2013, will retire in March and chair the board of directors.He will be taken over by the president of American Airlines Robert Isom..

“I’ve been working with Robert for 20 years and I’m very pleased to be the next Chief Executive Officer of American Airlines. This is really the best job in our industry.” Parker said in a statement.

Parker previously ran American West and became CEO of the airline just 10 days before the September 11 attack that devastated the aviation industry. He led the merger with US Airways and then oversaw the merger with US Airways American Airlines.

“Twenty years as CEO of an airline is a privilege of my life,” Parker said. “I am forever grateful to the American team. The American team has an unwavering commitment to caring for each other and our customers and will continue to support our success.”

Sarah Nelson, chairman of the Flight Attendants Association, praised Parker on Tuesday, arguing that Congress would provide federal assistance to the aviation industry in the midst of an airplane epidemic.

“Other CEOs don’t feel the urgency to work so hard, spend a lot of time with Congress or the government, or keep people connected to our work,” Nelson said in a statement.
