Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd each scored two goals, and the United States won the bronze medal in women’s soccer at the Tokyo Olympics, beating Australia 4-3.

It was arguably the best Americans have seen in the process of a rocky tournament that began with a featureless 3-0 defeat to Sweden. Rapinoe got in shape early on with a goal scored directly from the corner kick.

The loss ruined the Australians’ first trip to the Olympic medal round. Australian football teams, male or female, have never won medals.

Matildas was vulnerable to the United States, the world’s top teams, and the defenders of the World Cup who came to Japan in hopes of a fifth gold medal. However, Americans sometimes struggled during the tournament, including losing to Canada 1-0 in the semi-finals.

This victory marks the first time the United States has returned to the podium since the team won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. He also won the team’s first bronze medal and the first non-gold medal since women’s soccer began at the 1996 Olympic Games.
