From Fallsburg, NY-Ronald DeFeo Jr., who was later convicted of slaughtering his parents and four brothers in a house that influenced the book and movie The Amityville Horror, died in prison. Officials said on Monday.

DeFeo, 69, died at the Albany Medical Center on Friday and was taken from a prison in the Catskill Mountains of New York on February 2, the State Orthodontic Community Services Department said. The cause of his death was not immediately known.

DeFeo was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters at his home in Suffolk County in 1974.

The house became the basis of the classic horror film after another family temporarily lived there about a year after the murder, claiming that the house was haunted. The 1979 original and 2005 remake books and two films starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger feature strange voices, slime-oozing walls, naturally moving furniture, and other supernatural things. I draw a house with various characteristics.

DeFeo said he sought a crazy defense in his trial and heard a voice urging him to kill his family.

He attempted a retrial in 1992 but failed, claiming that his 18-year-old sister had killed five other families and then shot her.

“I loved my family very much,” he said at a 1999 parole hearing, saying he got married while in prison.

The Correctional Bureau said it could not clarify why DeFeo was hospitalized because of the Health and Privacy Act. The Albany County Coroner office said it was tasked with identifying the cause of his death and did not publish such information, except for relatives of the dead.
