According to police, an 85-year-old cyclist was killed in an aurora by a garbage truck.
Police said in a news release that the crash occurred at the intersection of East Exposition Avenue and South Havana Street around 2:55 pm on Monday.
According to police, the commercial truck stopped in the westbound lane of the exposition and was waiting to head north to Havana. When the traffic light turned green, the truck driver turned west at the same time as he crossed Havana at the pedestrian crossing, police said. The cyclist was hit by a truck. He was taken to a local hospital and died on Tuesday.
Police said the driver stayed on the scene and was supportive. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be the cause of the accident.
The identity of the cyclist was not announced in a police news release. According to police, the Arapahoe County Coroner office will publish the victim’s name after being notified to the family.
Investigation is in progress. Anyone who witnesses the crash or has a video footage of the incident will be asked to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 (STOP).
