The Anne Arundel County Board of Education has approved the change of name for Pasadena Middle School to Northeast Middle School.
After two hours of discussion on Wednesday night, the Board of Education in Anne Arundel County, Maryland approved the change of name for Pasadena Middle School to Northeast Middle School.

The school was originally named after George Fox, the director of the county’s first public school. George Fox did not support equal pay for equal work for black teachers. He was the director from 1916 to 1946.
Prior to the final vote, student member Drake Smith proposed amending the motion to change the name of the school instead. Sara V. JonesA county educator who oversaw a colored school from 1926 to 1964 and served under Fox before the county school began the integration process. Her name was nominated, but she didn’t advance to the second round due to lack of votes.
Although the community’s recommendations were for the northeast, Smith said it was important for the board to honor Jones before she was forgotten in the history of the county.
“Let’s honor the heroes of the past and do the right thing to inspire future students,” Smith said.
Melissa Ellis, Chairman of the Board, questioned whether Jones’ amendment to the supervisor’s recommendation was legal and called on Board advisors to consider it. After a temporary recess, the amendment was withdrawn after it was determined that the procedure was not appropriate.
Following the decision to withdraw the motion, board member Michelle Cocadel expressed her disagreement with Smith. When attending a meeting with parents about the name change, she said the community believed that the school name would be part of “their identity.”
“It was a community choice,” Corkadel said. “It wasn’t an arbitrary decision about the location or the easiest way.”
Corine Frank, a member of the board of directors representing the northeastern cluster, said he was initially concerned that the pandemic would reduce participation. Frank said on behalf of the elected family, watching parents attend meetings on this topic encouraged families to discuss future options with their children.
After the vote, board member Dana Scharheim proposed a way for Arlot to rally a committee to honor Jones and a motion to recognize the history of racism in the county.
The motion was passed, along with another motion to study the feasibility of adding the history of public schools in Anne Arundel County to the curriculum.
