Apple’s board of directors has opposed a proposal to end the company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program. In a proxy filing, the company said the National Center for Public Policy Research (a conservative think tank) submitted a proposal for Apple to “consider eliminating Inclusion & Diversity programs, policies, departments and goals.” The think tank’s proposal argued that DEI programs could make companies vulnerable to lawsuits, citing recent Supreme Court decisions against race-based affirmative action at colleges and noting that other companies have eliminated or scaled back similar programs. (Most recently, Meta eliminated its DEI program, and Amazon reportedly withdrew as well.) However, Apple said the proposal was “unnecessary” because the company “already has an established compliance program” that it may not be able to implement. from legal obstacles. The filing also criticized the proposal for being “inappropriate to manage the Company’s programs and policies.” The company also says it is “creating a culture of ownership where everyone can do their best work.”
