Atlanta Public School (APS) officially renamed Brown Junior High School to Herman J. Russell Westbrook Academy.
The decision to rename the school after Russell, a prominent local businessman, was made for his decades of activity and philanthropy in the West End. Russell was born and raised in the Summerhill area. He and his brothers continued to create jobs in the city through their company HJ Russell & Co.
The same name for Brown Middle School was former Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown, who especially supported the withdrawal and opposed the abolition of slavery.
This renaming is part of a greater tendency across the South to remove the names of former Confederates and slave owners from public buildings.
Earlier this summer, APS changed the name of Grady High School to Midtown High School. Student-led campaign..
