APS to continue online-only learning through fall – Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Albuquerque Public School board voted to extend online-only learning through the fall semester in a meeting on Wednesday. The board had originally planned to opt for a hybrid learning plan after Labor Day, but in a 6-1 vote the board voted to remain virtual until at least the spring semester.APS leaders said a parent survey found that 61% of parents believed in-person learning was still too risky. That survey also found that 60% of parents were also concerned about their children’s health, as well as the health of those in their household. And at least 51% of those parents were interested in long-term remote learning. An APS spokesperson told KOAT that about 59,000 current and former APS parents responded to the survey. “I don’t know how they expect families to do it,” said Heather Winkeljohn, a former APS parent. “A lot of family are two-income or single-parent. It puts a big burden on the parent, and now the parents suddenly has to become the bread winner, and also has to become the instructor, the counselor, all of that.”During Wednesday’s meeting, many teachers spoke about the decision to send kids back, including Kim Fisher, an Albuquerque High School teacher.”Given our school’s antiquated ventilation system,” Fisher said, “it is impossible for students and staff to stay safe under a hybrid model.”But still some believe education should never be a “one size fits all.””I feel if people are vulnerable, they are scared, there should be options, but kids need to be back in a classroom,” Winkeljohn said. There are some exceptions for in-person learning, specifically for students with special needs. Board members said they will continue to evaluate the spread of COVID-19 in New Mexico, and make changes as needed.What Remote Learning Looks Like During remote learning, students have a daily schedule that includes core subject instruction, social-emotional learning, breaks, and time for teachers to reach out to students and their families. The district recommends at least three hours a day of online instruction. Students also have time to complete assignments, practice activities, and seek extra help or guidance.Students are expected to attend their online classes daily and turn in assignments, just as they would during a more traditional school year. Attendance during remote learning is based on engagement. This could include logging into learning platforms such as Google Meets, See Saw, and Google Classroom. Students also may stay in touch with teachers by phone, email, and chat.Student work is graded during remote learning. Grading is NOT pass/fail as it was during the spring semester when the coronavirus unexpectedly disrupted the last few weeks of school. This school year, student grades will reflect mastery of subject content and completion of coursework. Teachers will keep students and families informed on their progress. Student grades also will be posted to ParentVUE and StudentVUE. Guidelines for schedules, attendance, grading, services and more are outlined in the APS Reentry Plan.
