Phoenix (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks broadcaster Bob Brenly will leave the booth over the next week after facing backlash against on-air comments about New York Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman’s hat ..
“From today, I have decided to take a break on my own initiative to listen, ponder and focus on awareness training related to diversity and inclusion,” Brenley said in a statement Thursday. “I will be back at the next homestand booth. Hopefully I will be a better person.”
Brenley, who worked at Barry Sports Arizona, said during the four Diamondbacks 6-5 10 innings wins in Arizona on Tuesday night.
“There is no doubt that it is the same durag that Tom Seaver wore when he pitched at Mets,” Brenley said.
After learning about Brenley’s comment, Straumann tweeted: The climb continues forever! “
Black Straumann also retweeted some reactions, some in favor, and others racist mockery.
Brenley apologized Wednesday and wasn’t at the Arizona match booth in Milwaukee on Thursday.
Brenley led the Diamondbacks to the 2001 World Series Champion in the first season.
