Arizona restauranteur wins fight with state over youth labor – Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona 2022-06-17 20:49:49 –

Phoenix (AP) —Restaurant owners fined by the Arizona Workplace Safety Agency for violating child labor law have been granted by the State Court of Appeals.

Carolyn Redend says she counterattacked the Arizona Industrial Commission because she knew she hadn’t harmed the 14- and 15-year-old hostesses she hired.

Redendo owns a small Latin restaurant called Sofrita on the outskirts of Phoenix in Fountain Hills.

The commission said she violated a law designed to protect children by putting a young hostess in the kitchen and unloading dirty dishes.

According to Thursday’s Court of Appeals, a law prohibiting teens under the age of 16 from cooking or baking does not prevent them from entering the kitchen from time to time.
