Sales of the restaurant have begun to recover from the COVID-19 crisis, but returning employees to work presents new challenges.
“One day we have 10 employees, and the next day we have one,” said General Manager. Fatima Dickerson..
Dickerson is having a hard time finding staff, so he works overtime.
“I know how to do more than one thing at a time, and that’s to survive,” she said.

Adding a higher minimum wage, Dickerson says the restaurant is having a hard time surviving.
“When people are finding an easy way, it ruins the culture of service,” she said.
There are government-sponsored financial support programs available at restaurants across the country, but Dickerson doesn’t want to borrow. This is what she is proud of.
“It’s muddy. Welton Street survived COVID,” she said.
Instead, Dickerson focuses on running this business as a family. This is changing.
“The family feels I’m having fun with Welton St. Café, I feel it’s slowly dying,” she said.
For now, Dickerson is looking to find more workers to help feed her customers and her community.
“We have to be creative about what the survivors look like,” she said.
