Riverside, California 2021-06-07 10:59:52 –

Ever Lopez and his family say they want an open dialogue with the school system.

Asheboro, NC — Update: Monday at 11:00 am Ever Lopez and his family hold a press conference. The family said they wanted to have a frank dialogue with the school in Ashbolo City after the graduation case. Lopez said he was denied a diploma because he wore the Mexican flag on a gown that violated the dress code. Ashboro Municipal School said it would revisit its policy for future graduation.

Ashboro’s 18-year-old Ever Lopez protested online and in front of Ashboro High School after an event at Thursday’s graduation ceremony.

The graduating senior said he was denied a diploma shortly after standing on stage.

A video from a member of the audience showed Lopez walking in a line of fellow 2021 graduation class dressed in a blue gown.

When Lopez arrives at the front where the principal is handing out diplomas, there will be a pause and the line will be put on hold for the duration of the conversation.

Shortly thereafter, Lopez left with only the diploma holder, but was applauded by the audience.

Lopez was said to have not been given a diploma because he wore the Mexican flag over his graduation gown.

He was also told that he needed to apologize.

A spokeswoman for Asheboro City School said, “The school district strongly supports students to express their heritage at the right time and place.”

“Our graduation dress code is clearly shared with students in advance, and wearing any kind of flag is a violation of the dress code,” the statement read.

Lopez said he read the policy but did not see any mention of unauthorized flags. He also said that during graduation, school officials approached him or pulled him aside. He said he was not allowed to raise the flag when he was on stage.

The school district said it would arrange with Lopez to receive Lopez’s diploma.

“First and foremost, we strongly support students in expressing their heritage at the right time and place. Our graduation dress code is clearly shared with students in advance and is everywhere. Wearing a kind of flag is a violation of the dress code. Over the past two years, we have allowed students to decorate their mortar boards with their own personality and creativity. It is very clear to the students that it is the only acceptable deviation of the gown from Legalia. Unfortunately, in the light of last night’s situation, we will revisit that decision for future senior classes.

We will continue to work with students and their families to resolve this issue so that they can receive a diploma from Asheboro High School. He is working very hard and we commend him for this great achievement. We are confident in his abilities and know that there is a bright future ahead of him. I will.

The criticisms made about our school and district are disappointing. We work daily with each student to ensure that they receive rigorous instruction, fair opportunities and compassionate care in a safe and engaging learning environment. Throughout our school and district, we are passionate about seeing all our students succeed. “
