Seoul, South Korea (AP) — South Korea recorded the largest daily increase in coronavirus infection in almost three months to strengthen the rules of social distance in the metropolitan area.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported 313 new cases on Wednesday, increasing the country’s total, including 496 deaths, to 29,311.

The number of cases per day in Japan exceeded 300 for the first time since late August.

South Korea has been struggling to curb a surge in new infections last month as it relaxed strict social distance expansion rules. New cases relate to hospitals, nursing homes, churches, schools, offices and family gatherings.

Local health officials announced on Tuesday that they would tighten distance restrictions in the densely populated Seoul region and parts of eastern Gangwon-do. These areas are at the heart of the recent surge.

The new rules, which will come into force on Thursdays in these areas for two weeks, prohibit more than 100 people from gathering during rallies, festivals and concerts. You should also have at least one seat away in theaters, concert halls, and libraries, while limiting the audience for sporting events to 30% of the stadium’s capacity.

— Australian states, including the city of Adelaide, will be closed for six days starting midnight Wednesday, with schools, universities, bars and cafes closed. Only one person from each South Australian household is allowed to leave home daily for certain reasons. Authorities announced a move on Wednesday after the cluster of new cases increased to 22. The chief minister, Stephen Marshall, says he believes the blockade will act as a “circuit breaker”, reducing the risk of further outbreaks. Health officials say they believe that Adelaide hotel workers, who have been quarantined by people arriving abroad, have caught the virus and infected other families. The restrictions also close most factories, blockade geriatric care facilities, and put weddings and funerals on hold. Outdoor exercise is prohibited and masks are required.
