At least three people were killed and other passengers were injured after seven Amtrak trains went off track in north-central Montana, according to local sheriff office officials.
Officials at the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said people on board shortly after all Saturday derailments were taken off the train.
There were multiple injuries, but there was no final count, officials added.
The cause of the accident was not immediately apparent. The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate late Saturday.
According to Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams, when seven cars derailed near Joplin, the Empire Builder train had about 147 passengers and 13 crew members. According to local media, he headed from Chicago to Seattle.
A train passenger, Megan Vandervest, who was about to visit a friend in Seattle, told the New York Times that he was awakened by a derailment.
“To be honest, I was worried and heard that the train was derailing, so I first thought it was derailing,” said Vandervest from Minneapolis.
“My second idea was that it was crazy. We never derail. It’s just like it doesn’t happen.”
She told the newspaper that the car behind was tilted, the car behind was completely overturned, and the three cars behind were “completely off the railroad tracks and off the train.”
Speaking from the Liberty County Senior Center where the passengers were taken, Vandervest said it felt like “extreme turbulence in an airplane.”
Amtrak was working with local governments to transport injured passengers and safely evacuate all other passengers, Abrams added.
The National Transportation Safety Board will send a team of 14 members, including investigators and experts in railroad signals and other areas, to investigate the conflict, spokesman Eric Weiss said.
No other trains or equipment were involved in the derailment, Wyeth said.
