The University of Nebraska Omaha is literally at the heart of world-class art, music, food and recreation.

No matter how long you call Omaha your hometown, there are always new discoveries in the metro. Here are just a few of our suggestions:


Near: 1-3 miles

Omaha Community Playhouse (.8 miles)

OCP is the nation’s largest community theater with frequent fascinating shows and plays that bring the Omaha community to life.

Akshaben Village (1 mile)

In the heart of Omaha, you’ll find the best of entertainment, lively fashion boutiques, unique restaurants, scenic green spaces and Akshaben Village. You can also go to the village to watch the latest movies at Akshaben Cinema or have your next meal at the Omaha Farmers Market.

Historical Benson (2 miles)

A short drive north of the campus, it’s one of Omaha’s most historic districts, with a thriving arts and entertainment scene. Benson, which was annexed by the city of Omaha in 1917, was Omaha’s central business district and also had its own amusement park. Today, Maple Street’s Benson Strip is lined with music venues, delicious food, collaborative artist spaces, and places for the whole family to enjoy.

Spillbound board game cafe (2.7 miles)

Spielbound is a magical café with a library of over 2500 board games where you can enjoy vibrant espresso and delicious pizza.

Dewey Dog Park (3 miles)

Dewey Dog Park is a newly opened off-leash park in the middle of Midtown Crossing and Leavenworth. The park is open all year round, with agility courses, running water, and self-cleaning artificial turf, and there are plenty of places to sit and relax while your dog is having fun.

Joslyn Art Museum (3.2 miles)

The Joslyn Art Museum is the main museum in Nebraska. It was opened in 1931 by Sarah H. Joslyn in honor of her husband, businessman, George A. Joslyn. Featuring hundreds of artworks that transcend time, country and influence, it’s a true Omaha treasure. (Currently closed due to renovation work)

Old market (4.2 miles)

The Old Market is Omaha’s most historic district and is still alive and prosperous. Interesting venues, contemporary galleries, cute cobblestone streets, and great shopping locations.

Slow down (4.5 miles)

Located in the heart of NoDo (North Downtown), Slowdown is a world-class music venue where everything from music to comedy to education comes together. Check the evetns schedule.

Papio Fun Park (4.5 miles)

Winner of Omaha Magazine’s Best of Omaha 2018, Papio Fun Park is famous for its abundant activities. From go-karts to miniature golf to laser tags, everything is exciting.

Elm Theoratino (5.9 miles)

Henry Dolly Zoo and Aquarium (6.2 miles)

Henry Dory Zoo has been loyal to the Omaha community for 125 years and is consistently ranked among the top five zoos in the world. Check out the recently added exhibits of Scott Africa Meadow and the Asian Highlands and classics like Reed Jungle and Sae Yamamoto and Walter Scott Aquarium.

Fontenaire Forest (9.6 miles)

The Fontenelle Forest, which spans more than 2,100 acres of forests, grasslands and marshes along the Missouri River, is one of Omaha’s best-preserved natural fortresses.

Glacier Creek Reserve (12.1 miles)

Omaha is all UNO’s campus, especially the Glacier Creek Reserve, a rolling hill, grassland, and tall grassy outdoor nature reserve. Whether you want to make friends with a few friends or go out in a group, this glacier creek is perfect for truly immersing yourself in unblemished nature.

Warner Park (12.4 miles)

Head southwest to experience this unique outdoor venue home to Omaha Storm Chaser, Kansas City Royals Triple A Affiliate, and national champion professional soccer team Union Omaha Owl.

Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard (16.4 miles)

As the trees turn into vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow, and the scent of autumn refreshes the air, you know it’s time to visit Valaz. Vala’s is the only place where you can get Hayrack rides, corn mazes, haunted farmhouses, and barn animal bands all in one place.
