Aurora Central High School Senior Angel Briones demonstrated to students on Monday how to solder metal in a jewelry making class.
“As a senior, I chose to come here for art as long as I wanted to quit my period and go home,” Briones said.
Briones admitted that he was disappointed that he wasn’t here in grades 2022-2023, when Aurora Central High School became the district’s first magnet school for visual and performing arts.

Aurora Central offers the same core classes, clubs and sports that students expect in high school as a magnet for visual and performing arts. But leaders said the track was particularly appealing to creative students.

Formerly the principal of Minami Junior High School, Mehran Ahmed will be the principal of the high school. He said the arts program would help students with critical thinking and problem-solving.
“We can create this magnet that creates this creative mindset. When children graduate from Aurora Central, they will have the skills to do what they love,” Ahmed said. increase.
The district hired Jessica Brown, who founded the public art magnet in Philadelphia, to oversee the arts program from kindergarten to high school. Brown, Ahmed and Graziani will spend next year designing school programs and curriculum with other stakeholders. Mr Brown said he would also take in opinions from parents, teachers and students.
Park said transportation must be provided to all students in the district who enroll in the Magnet Program. The hope is to provide access and opportunity to all APS students who want to increase their educational expertise.
“What really got you hooked on at school? Was it a club, sport, or a particular subject? I think all Aurora students deserve such a path,” Park said.
