Best First Cars for Beginners

After the uncertainty of the previous 2 years, new drivers are finally set to hit UK roads again, with 1.3 million expected to earn their license in 2021-22. Choosing a first car can be a daunting process for new drivers; many have not looked past preparations for their test, and may not know exactly what they’re looking for – or what they might need in a first car to begin with. This list seeks to solve that problem, with four simple choices for first car and the reasons they’d be a great place to start for the new driver.

Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is a hugely popular first car for many, and for good reason; they are astonishingly compact for the amount of boot space they can offer, and very nimble as a result of their size. They are a forgiving drive, and their suspension makes for an easy drive as well. Ultimately, the Clio is a friendly car, on handling, suspension, and even budget. That said, newer models of Clio might be difficult to justify purchasing outright, especially for first-time drivers with little in the way of budget – but are commonly a high-quality, inexpensive option for car lease deals whether new or used, giving you every opportunity to make a saving.

Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is the stylish choice for new drivers, and impossible to resist when it’s on your shortlist. The retro throwback design is timeless, with two-tone colour schemes and a number of luxurious extras – including leather trim – available for an even more chic experience. The car has an impressively high MPG, and offers a little more stature on the road than its ultra-compact competitors. It is perfect for city driving, but not to be sniffed at for road trips and longer journeys.

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is maybe the quintessential ‘first car’ for younger new drivers; they’ve been the stereotypical ‘boy racer’ car since hitting second-hand markets in the 90s, and newer iterations of the Fiesta retain much of the same appeal. They are unassumingly swift, and quick off the mark thanks to some powerful acceleration. Their handling is best-in-class, and the 5-door models pack in a lot of additional space for passengers and for luggage. They’re cheap to run as well, making them an extremely economical option that’s also fun to drive.

Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa is hatchback royalty, a solid car with a solid history and an excellent choice for your very first vehicle. Once again, it boasts a surprising amount of boot space for its relatively small form factor; it is also extremely reliable, and notable for reduced costs associated with servicing and repairs. In terms of the newer models, all-electric options are now available – enabling you to transition away from fossil fuels straight away in your car ownership journey.
