Australian courts have dismissed a challenge to the federal government’s strict authority to prevent most citizens from leaving the country in order to prevent them from taking COVID-19 home.
Most Australians have been stuck in their home countries for over a year under a government emergency order created under strong biosecurity laws.
Australia is the only developed democracy to prevent its citizens and permanent residents from leaving the country, except in “exceptional situations”.
Libertarian group LibertyWorks claimed that the government did not have the authority to enforce travel bans.
However, the judge said that when the Biosecurity Act was passed in 2015, Congress was aware of the harsh impact of the law. LibertyWorks is considering an appeal to the High Court.
