Virginia officials are investigating the death of a man in police detention.
Prince William County police were called to a location in Gainesville around 7 pm Tuesday to investigate reports of the fighting, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said police officers encountered Robert Leroy Reed, 39, of Manassas. He was believed to be involved in the fight and appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Investigators said Reed approached the 38-year-old woman from behind and began dragging her arm around her neck. Police said the woman was able to escape, but not before Reed bit her.
When police detained Reed, they found a vial containing a liquid suspected of being PCP. Later, Reed began to show signs of seizures, and officers called in emergency medical personnel.
Police said Reed had been evaluated by medical personnel but refused to be taken to the hospital or further treated. Police officers then took him to jail to handle him on suspicion of felony assault.
The lead became unresponsive while it was booked. Officers began performing CPR on him, but he later died in a local hospital.
The autopsy department performs an autopsy to determine the cause and method of death. Two police officers were put on regular leave until the results of the investigation were available.
