Houston, Texas-Mariachi is more than just music. For the 25 young performers of Mariachi Los Pasajeros at Kinder HSPVA, it’s a way of life and a tradition that transcends generations.

The mariachi experience did not begin in the classroom for most people. Many of the students learned to play at home, incorporating music grown by their parents and grandparents.

Mariachi Los Spa Sageros is known for one of the state’s best mariachi programs and has won the highest honors at the Texas UIL Mariachi Festival. The ensemble received an excellent Division 1 score, the highest rating possible. They are the only group to win that honor from Houston.

The ensemble consists of 25 musicians, playing guitar, guitar, trumpet, violin, vihuela and harp. They often perform in the city at places like the Houston Public Library and at local schools.

“They know that it makes a difference to people. They know that it really makes the soul side of the audience bold,” said director Antonio Roca. “Every time I hear their voice, I see the reaction of the audience, and every time I see them connect with them, I’m the most proud in the world.”
