Boston (WHDH)-Massachusetts is preparing to set up a field hospital as new coronavirus cases continue to grow in many communities throughout the state, Governor Charlie Baker said Tuesday.
Since Workers’ Day, the number of newly reported virus cases in the Commonwealth has increased by about 300 percent and the number of new hospitalizations has increased by almost 200 percent, Baker said at a press conference at the State Capitol.
As of Tuesday, the state-wide hospital occupancy was 67% and the ICU occupancy was 50%, Baker said.
“The trend is clearly going in the wrong direction and there are no signs of change,” Baker said.
Baker said the state’s COVID-19 command center is currently planning a second surge in virus cases, expanding hospital capacity and coordinating with healthcare professionals to set up alternative medicine facilities. explained.
“I hope you don’t have to use many of these additional resources, but the preparation or healthcare system keeps the school open, the economy open, and the healthcare system open. It helps, “says Baker.
To counter the second surge, according to Baker, hospitals are ready to provide an additional 400 beds available to COVID-19 patients by converting acute care beds to ICU beds. The governor said his administration would consider re-launching field hospitals in various locations to make more space available.
“We are working with MEMA and hospital staff to identify suitable locations for staff facilities,” Baker said. “When and where these facilities start up depends in part on the space available and where their needs are.”
The field hospital is fully equipped with beds, life-saving equipment and medical supplies. Additional details about the planned location of the hospital will be announced later this week, Baker said.
“Launching a field hospital obviously adds capacity, but our resources are ultimately limited,” Baker explained. “After all, the control of this virus depends in many ways on the daily behavior of everyone … People have been vigilant these days. This is the spike seen in the positive case. Evidence by. “
Public health data show that more than 4,000 new cases were identified last weekend alone.
Baker said the state is possible to keep hospitals open for people to receive selective treatment and routine medical care, unlike in the spring when some services were put on hold during a pandemic. He added that he would continue to do as much as he could.
The governor also urged all residents to comply with his new stay-at-home order, reduced collection size limits and renewed mask obligations.
