Barcelona, Spain (AP) —Barcelona appeals for suspension of two games passed to coach Ronald Koeman to exclude him from a serious clash with Atletico Madrid in the widespread Spanish league title race.
Koeman was shown a red card for using what the referee considered rude when Barcelona lost to Granada 2-1 on Thursday. The defeat sacrificed his team a chance to take the lead in the Spanish league.
After considering the case, the Spanish Football Federation increased the mandatory one-game ban to two games and urged an appeal from Barcelona.
“According to the referee’s report, I looked down on the assistant referee, and that’s not right for me,” Koeman said on Saturday. “Despising is an insult, and I only commented with respect on some plays.
“It’s not fair, so sending it out bothers me,” continued the Dutch. “We need to figure out what will happen (in terms of appeal).”
Referee Pablo Gonzalez recorded in his match report that Koeman was shown a red card for saying “what character” to his assistant after being warned several times to see his language. .. The federation’s competition committee then added a second game to the pause on Friday night.
It will have a direct impact on the title battle as it will keep Koeman away from the dougout of the Barcelona match in Valencia on Sunday and the next round match against Atletico at Camp Nou.
Atletico, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla are all fighting for the most contested league title in the last few years.
