Tampa, Florida-The University of South Florida men’s basketball coach quit his job after making some racist comments and triggered an independent investigation.
College officials announced on Tuesday that Tom Herrion’s assistant coach was no longer on the team. Three months after its release, several student athletes complained about racist remarks.
Michael Kelly, Vice President of Athletics at USF, said:
The investigators interviewed more than 12 staff and current and former players during the review process.
Three of the four comments were substantiated, and two were found to violate the school’s policy of illegal activity.
During summer training in 2020, Herrion reportedly responded racistly to players wearing sweatshirts labeled “Support Black Colleges.” Helion denied making a comment.
According to a January report, Helion told students to move fast “as police are chasing you” during training. The student athlete and several others found that the comments were racially motivated and played a stereotype between blacks and police.
Helion later told investigators that the comments were “misplaced” but racially motivated. He says it was a specific reference to the actual encounter the player encountered with the police.

“This is a time when diversity is really important,” said Yvette Lewis of the NAACP Hillsboro. Everyone should have the right to feel comfortable in the workplace, the school should have the opportunity, and it should not be robbed or stripped because of someone’s old personal view. It will not be. “
According to an independent review, the men’s basketball program is “active in tackling racial issues” and there is no racially-related hostile or problematic culture.
“Report that Brian Gregory Head Coach and our administration are operating according to the University of South Florida’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, and that our process to ensure those efforts is upheld. I’m happy to see the results of this survey, “Kelly said. “Overall, this review reaffirms my belief in Gregory’s leadership in our program. The entire athlete department will continue to focus on fostering a comprehensive environment in which all student athletes can grow. I will do it. “
