Quincy, Massachusetts. (WHDH)-The battle between Mayor Boston and Mayor Quincy is intensifying over the reconstruction of the bridge between cities.
The city of Boston wants to rebuild the bridge that once connected Moon Island and Long Island, but Mayor Quincy has filed a proceeding to suspend the project.
Federal agents say this could be a civil rights infringement, as Boston wants to open a long-term opioid recovery facility on Long Island.
Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch is not against the facility, but is worried about the traffic that the project could cause.
“Boston owns the island, so it’s not up to me to direct its use,” he said. “But if its use interferes with the quality of life of my occupants, that’s where I have to intervene, and that’s the whole problem here.”
But Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the city needs a bridge to connect people with life-saving resources.
“We need to keep looking for resources, housing and treatment spaces,” Wu said. “We want to ensure conversations in the community. This is clearly a bigger issue than Boston, but we’re doing our best to keep moving forward.”
The city of Quincy said it is cooperating with a US law firm in the investigation.
