In recent months, highway officials have made changes to the road surface after many serious accidents in the dangerous part of the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County – Deliberately scrape it off..

The idea is to try to slow down the driver. But is it working?

Chopper 4 is a good indication of what is happening along the beltway. The light gray color of the road indicates where the road was intentionally roughened by a method called friction surface wear treatment. The dark gray lane on the right remains.

The lane markings will continue to be displayed. They are not being treated because the markings need to be preserved.

When you drive in a rough lane, you feel like the wheels are sticking together.

“I know I’m holding the wheel tight, and my son is afraid to drive there,” said local driver Melissa Brady.

But Brady says it’s time for a safety change, even if it means coarser pavement.

“There are a lot of accidents that happen there. People are in trouble, speeding up or hunting down other cars,” she said.

The Maryland Department of Transportation attempts to slow down the driver using a technique called frictional wear on the beltway. Traffic reporter Adam Tas explains.

According to the Maryland Highways Administration (MdSHA), work between Bradley Boulevard and Connecticut Avenue is about 40% complete, requiring an additional 10 nights of work to fully complete the project. However, there are safety benefits.

“It will be easier for vehicles to stop in the event of a collision,” said Shanti Felix of the Maryland Department of Transportation. “And it will also reduce hydroplaning.”

Night lane closures are expected to increase from 7 pm every night.
