A Major League Soccer player has been accused of making racist remarks during Saturday night’s game, currently under investigation by the league.

A matchup between the San Jose Earthquakes and the New York Red Bulls was called off after a player said he heard his opponent use racist language on the pitch.

“Racist remarks were made. I don’t think it was directed at me,” said Earthquakes forward Jeremy Evovis. Post-match press conference without naming other players.

“It’s also important to note that racism and language can’t be thrown in any direction, whether it’s a black player or not.

MLS said in a statement It has launched an investigation into the incident and the league “has no tolerance for abusive or offensive language and takes these allegations seriously.”

Red Bulls echoed that sentiment, the club said they would cooperate in a league survey.

Earthquakes head coach Ruchi Gonzalez later said he urged Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber to remove the player who allegedly made racist remarks from the game.

“I definitely said that this player shouldn’t be on the field anymore,” Gonzalez said. “I know it’s an accusation, but I believe in the players. I trust the players. If they say anything, they’re in front of professional footballers. He is a person of great character.

The match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.
