Kansas City, Missouri — Lindsey Jarrett asked for help when she saw a friend on her Facebook post asking for her father’s kidney donor.
More than a year later, she donated her kidneys to Dr. Pete Povendran, a stranger who now shares a lifelong bond.
“I have a really close family. We have a small network of loved ones, so they had a lot of questions,” Jarrett said. “Most people ask that fundamental question —” Why do you do it for others you don’t know? “
Jarrett says he wanted to be a living donor for a longtime friend who died of cancer.
“I felt that if the opportunity reappeared, I would open my heart, and it happened,” she said.
This opportunity came when Poovendran, a retired anesthesiologist living in Indiana, was in need after decades of dealing with kidney conditions.
“My kidneys were almost closed,” he said.
Paulendran said he was hesitant to get hope when he heard Jarrett, a woman living in Kansas City, wanting to donate her kidneys to him. He had previously failed several other voluntary donors for some reason.
“I have one last hope left. I didn’t know what the reaction would be until the final day,” he said.
The day came after Jarrett screened, tested, and traveled during the pandemic.
“I really felt like I was giving my body to something bigger,” Jarrett said.
After both successful surgeries, Jarrett and Povendran had the opportunity to meet for the first time in the hospital.
“The nurse came and asked me. I absolutely said, and then I saw her, and the first thing I did was to cry,” said Povendran. “I’m still emotional when I think about six or five months later.”
“We held hands. We didn’t really talk much to each other,” Jarrett said. “I said,’I am very happy that you can give you more life to be with your loved one.'”
Jarrett donated his kidneys to Povendran in collaboration with IU Health University Hospital in Indiana.
“I can’t express my gratitude in words,” said Powendran.
