Biden announces new steps to boost vaccine supply

President Joe Biden has announced a series of actions to ensure that the federal government has adequate vaccines for the entire US population by the end of the summer.

The Biden administration will increase the overall weekly vaccine supply to states, tribes, and territories from 8.6 million to a minimum of 10 million. This increase in doses of 1.4 million doses per week allows millions of Americans to be vaccinated sooner than previously expected. The administration has promised to maintain this as the lowest supply level for the next three weeks.

The government is taking steps to provide states, tribes, and territories with a reliable three-week supply look-ahead. The Department of Health and Human Services will provide quotation estimates for the next three weeks instead of the previously received one-week look-ahead.

This increased transparency will enable state and local leaders to be more secure in their supply, plan vaccination efforts, and administer vaccines effectively and efficiently.

President Biden has instructed the COVID-19 Response Coordinator to work with HHS to increase the total supply of vaccines to the American people. According to Biden, the government is working to purchase another 100 million more anticovid vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna.

This will increase total US vaccine orders by 50% from 400 million to 600 million. These additional doses will be available this summer. According to Biden, these additional doses will give the United States enough vaccine to fully vaccinate 300 million Americans by the end of this summer.

“We are using the Defense Production Act to launch a full-scale wartime effort to address the supply shortages inherited from the previous administration,” he told reporters.

“We work with private companies throughout the government to increase the production of vaccines and protective equipment (syringes, needles, gloves, cotton swabs, masks), protect, test and immunize and take care of our people. Please do, “he added.

The government is also expanding tests to help schools and businesses reopen safely and protect the most vulnerable people.

Biden argued that in the coming months, masks, not vaccines, would be the best defense against COVID-19. “According to experts, wearing a mask from now until April saves 50,000 lives and will die if you don’t wear a mask,” he said.

He warned that things would continue to get worse before things got better. “According to experts, the death toll could exceed 500,000 by the end of next month (February), and cases will continue to grow,” he said.
