Biden is likely to lead the Pentagon not a feminist victory | Arwa Mahdawi | Opinion

Awakened wash of war

It’s time to embark on the military-industrial complex, women! The Pentagon is one of three cabinet agencies that have never been led by women, and the others are finance and veterans issues. But now it looks like one of the last glass ceilings is about to be destroyed. It is widely expected that Joe Biden will appoint Michelle Flournoy as America’s first female Secretary of Defense.

The Associated Press headline has made a lot of noise about this historic appointment. “Biden breaks the barrier and chooses women to lead the Pentagon,” he declared. The work states that Fronoi’s appointment “will be in line with Biden’s promise to have a diverse cabinet.”

Unless you’re particularly excited about this diversity, I’m sorry. Fronoi, a senior defense adviser to the Bill Clinton and Barack Obama administrations, may be the first woman in charge of the Pentagon, but she actually does something to better change US foreign policy. It seems unlikely that you will. Fronoi, widely considered one of Obama’s more hawkish advisers, helped mastermind the intensification of the cruel war in Afghanistan. In a 2017 Washington Post editorial, she called for increased defense spending, arguing that Trump “has the right to increase the need for more defense spending.” She complains that Obama wasn’t using enough military power, especially in Syria. She supported the war in Iraq and Libya. She has a favorable relationship with contractors in the defense industry and is a board member of Booz Allen Hamilton.

You see, ok, anyone who could be the Secretary of Defense would be in some way a problem. If you’re anti-war or you’re against American imperialism, it’s not the kind of work you tend to get. But that doesn’t mean that the Pentagon chief needs to act like Fronoy’s appointment, as it’s a kind of feminist victory. There is nothing far away about feminists about women in rich countries dropping bombs on women in poor countries.

Nor is there a feminist who has already used Fronoi’s gender as a cynical weapon to undermine meaningful criticism of her policy. For example, criticizing Fronoi is a sexist, according to Michelle Eoyan, senior vice president of national security at a think tank called Thirdway. “White progressives ignite women and women of color, [national security] The department makes me very uncomfortable about their alliance for those communities. ” Tweet last week. “Especially [national security] The community is dominated by whites. “

all right? If you want to be on the side of a woman, you have to help her no matter how many bombs you drop. It’s like a real “alliance”! Three cheers for cross-imperialism!

I am worried that there will be many such meaningless identity politics in the next four years. Biden has been praised for appointing women and non-whites to strong positions, and is worried that this “diversity” may help awaken harmful policies.

I’m worried that the unethical things the Biden administration does aren’t as bad as the trauma of the Trump era, so they might shrug. We are worried that we will return to business as usual and forget that Trump was first elected to business.

The future of prenatal testing and down syndrome

Advances in prenatal testing have made it easier for parents to screen for symptoms such as Down Syndrome very early in pregnancy and make an abortion decision. “Few people publicly say they want to’eliminate’Down Syndrome,” Sarah Chang wrote in this thought-provoking Atlantic article. “Still, the individual choices are very close to that.” They also reinforce their usual narrow vision. “Genetic testing as a medical service is used to enforce the” normal “boundary by screening for abnormalities,” Zhang wrote. “”[B]Seeing all the anomalies that are compatible with life may actually broaden our understanding of normality. “

Pope Francis’s official Instagram account “liked” the slightly covered picture of the Brazilian model, causing considerable confusion. The Vatican claims they have nothing to do with it and asks Instagram for an explanation. It must have been an act of God.

Week Ponziarchy

What do you do when the FBI comes after you by implementing the $ 35 million Ponzi scheme? Obviously, use an underwater scooter to escape from the water. That’s what Matthew Piercy did anyway. According to official documents, Piercy “has disappeared for a while in water where law enforcement can only see bubbles,” but eventually had to appear dripping to face justice-and perhaps. A terrifying cold.
