Wilmington, Delaware (AP) — South Carolina’s longtime Democratic executive Jamie Harrison is the choice of President Joe Biden, who heads the National Party, according to several party executives.
Harrison is expected to be elected without major opposition when the Democratic National Committee is convened in a virtual session next Thursday, the day after Biden’s inauguration. Authorities spoke on condition of anonymity, as the decision was not announced.
The 44-year-old was hired with strong support from the chairs of state parties across the country and Biden’s close ally and top black parliamentarian, House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn.
Harrison is also black and supports his pledge to form a racially and ethnically diverse cabinet and leadership team in Biden.
“Everyone cleared the field for Jaime,” said Texas Democratic President Gilbert Inohosa. “Everyone supported this. It is really important for States parties to get someone like Jaime because of the importance of ensuring that the National Commission continues to strengthen them. I really felt that. “
Harrison was previously chairman of the Democratic Party of South Carolina. When Tom Perez was elected the party’s first Latino chair, he ran for DNC chair in 2017.
He challenged Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in 2020 to draw a record total of election contributions from across the country. But President Donald Trump’s close ally, Graham, eventually won nearly 10 percent points. This is a margin due to the high turnout of the president’s base. Harrison, a graduate of Yale University and Georgetown Law, who often talks about growing up in poverty in South Carolina, first became prominent by working at Capitol Hill in Cliburn’s Whip office.
