President Joe Biden Former Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Dr. Robert Caliph, is being appointed to lead the agency again. The Washington Post reported Thursday..

Obama’s appointed caliph led the FDA from February 2016 to February 2017, a year later as Deputy Commissioner for FDA’s medical products and tobacco, according to the FDA’s website. His nomination will mark the end of a nine-month search for a permanent successor to Deputy Commissioner Janet Woodcock, who tentatively took over the agency in January.

Biden will have to appoint Woodcock or elect another full-time member by mid-November, the post reported. White House officials told the publication that Biden hadn’t made his choice yet, but Caliph declined to comment.

Prior to joining the FDA, Caliph was Deputy Prime Minister of Clinical and Translational Research at Duke University, according to the FDA’s website. A cardiologist and graduate of the university’s School of Medicine, he directed Duke’s Institute of Translation Medicine and founded the Duke Clinical Institute, the FDA said.
