Norfolk, Virginia (WAVY) —About two weeks later, runners are waiting again to hear the starter pistol at Hampton Roads.
Virginia Beach-based J & A Racing hosted a virtual event during the pandemic, followed by a socially distant shamrock marathon earlier this year.
But Big Blue 5K differs only because it’s normal.
Kate Napolitano, Vice President of Marketing at J & A, said:
As a small business that relies on direct gatherings, Napolitano and the rest of the staff weren’t even sure they could survive the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was held just before the 2020 Shamrock Marathon, the company’s largest annual event.
“Runners are resilient. I learned it from the beginning,” said Napolitano.
J & A started staggered to pull the runners apart with a successful virtual event, PPP loan, and finally Shamrock 2021.
“This time we have a true starting line and the enclosure is turned off as usual,” said Napolitano. “We’ll have a finish line in the field and we’ll have everything we’ve ever had, including post-race parties, beer, bagels, and more.”
The race guides runners on the ODU campus as the school makes its own new start with a new school year, a new football coach and a recently rebuilt stadium.
“This year was a tough year and we are happy to celebrate with us and have a good time across the finish line,” said Napolitano.
J & A expects 1,500 to 2,000 spectators. Virtual options are available.
