Fresno, Calif. (KFSN)-Big Brothers in Central California Big Sisters continues to donate $ 1.5 million to help improve the lives of local children.

38 branches nationwide will receive a portion of the $ 122.6 million donation from MacKenzie Scott.

The Central California Chapter serves thousands of single-parent families, caregiver children, and students with captive parents in the counties of Madera, Fresno, Kings, and Tulare.

Due to the pandemic, the local branch had to let go of the staff.

Now Phakonekham says they are planning to expand.

“The need is so high that we need more money to hire more staff to serve more children,” she said. “Once again, this blessing has happened, so we take advantage of it, really serve our children, improve our community, and influence what we are trying to do every day. I’m really excited about it. “

Reina Rodriguez is a former sister of the organization and a deferred action for childhood arrival, or a recipient of DACA.

She and her family emigrated to California and lived in the rural Tulare County community of Ivanhoe.

Rodriguez says he faced many challenges in his life, but he benefited greatly from being appointed to his sister through the organization.

“The empowerment I received when I was young may have been difficult to grow up, but it made me realize that there was a reason I was alive and there was more than a hard life,” she said. rice field. she said.

Rodriguez says her sister believed in her, guided her throughout her life, and gave her hope.

Rodriguez now works for the same company as her ex-sister, and she is a mentor, devoting her life to inspiring other young children.
