Honolulu (KHON2) — Hawaii Island police reported that a 39-year-old man died after a car crash in Hilo on Monday, October 18.

According to police, the man was identified as Hiro’s William Townsend. A traffic accident occurred in the area of ​​Saddle Road and Kaumana Drive just before 6:30 pm on Monday.

Police said the 2014 Honda Grom motorcycle was heading downhill east on Kaumana Drive. This is reported to be wet. The motorcyclist then crossed the east-facing lane, entered the west-facing gravel shoulder of Kaumana Drive, lost control, and fell to the saddle road intersection.

Police said the 2020 Kia sedan, heading west on Saddle Road, turned left to avoid hitting a motorcycle in the lane, but instead hit a fallen motorcycle. At the time of the incident, it was raining, the roadway was wet, and the area was dark.

Police on the Big Island are investigating the collision and have identified wet roads and speed as factors, but have not yet identified whether alcohol or drugs are also factors. It seems that the motorcyclist did not have a helmet at the time of the accident.
