Cleveland, Ohio 2020-11-19 16:28:00 –
The George Gand Foundation announced Thursday that it will award $ 1 million to the nonprofit Birthing Beautiful Communitys and open a “comprehensive birth center” in Huff.
This grant was one of the millions of dollars announced at the Gand Foundation’s annual meeting and one of many directed to black-led organizations. The BBC’s executive director, Christine Farmer, said the birth center will be the only independent center in Ohio to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality in Cleveland black women and babies. Quality care that leads to childbirth results. ”
Infant mortality has declined in Kaiyahoga County in recent years, but the mortality gap between white and black infants remains extreme.
Farmer founded the BBC in 2014 with a grant of less than $ 5,000. Through her dedication and leadership, she has grown into one of Cleveland’s most influential small nonprofits.
We are beyond excitement and appreciation for the $ 1,000,000 awarded by the Gand Foundation to build a comprehensive birth center in the Huff district. What a big step towards a racially fair childbirth result! Thanks to the staff and the board. 🤗 https: //t.co/yXKlKELdLx
