The Aurora family made a considerable trip to Texas on Tuesday after concerns from Denver-Frontier Airlines passengers caused an unpleasant experience in law enforcement.
A 21-year-old black woman, Lakeyjanay Bailey, was traveling from Denver to Dallas with her 4-year-old adopted daughter, white Olivia.
Authorities were waiting in the gate when the pair landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
“There were two cops, and they approached me and said,’Are we okay to talk to you?'” Bailey said.
One officer asked Olivia, “She knew me, I knew what I was for her, and he asked what my mother was for her.” A series of other questions follow.
Police officers met at the gate in response to a request from law enforcement agencies from Frontier Airlines, according to a DFW Public Security Bureau case report.
According to Bailey, the policeman talked to her mother and a social worker to confirm certain information. Then they followed the pair to the baggage claim before talking to the person who picked them up.
“People kept staring at us and whispering while they were talking to us,” Bailey said.
Frontier Airlines has questioned police after fearing a possible trafficking incident involving a woman born in 2001 who was traveling with a woman born in 2017, according to the incident report. Requested an investigation.
For Bailey, the underlying factor is clear.
“I think the situation would be different if the role changed and a white man got off the plane with a black man, just like a black kid,” Bailey said.
Frontier Airlines issued a statement to Denver 7 on this matter, confirming that passengers are concerned about trafficking in the pair.
During the flight, another passenger suspected of being trafficked sitting near a woman and her child expressed concern. The passenger approached the flight crew with those concerns and then completed a written report to record her observations during the flight. The captain was notified and felt obliged to report the problem. Air travel is one of the most common means of trafficking. The race played no role in the flight crew’s actions according to established protocols.
Denver7 requested the frontier to make a copy of the report and requested an established protocol that the flight crew followed but had not yet received a response.
Meanwhile, Bailey and her family are considering filing a proceeding against Frontier Airlines.
