There are still some fires smoldering throughout Colorado, but the crew has done a lot of work to fight and control the flames.
The latest spark was the Black Mountain Fire on August 29th. As of Tuesday, the crew had established 91% containment. The fire is one of four that is still active from this summer’s fire season.
The Black Mountain fire is about eight miles northeast of Kremling. Crew members have been added to the containment along the western edge of the fire area, where firefighters have cleared debris and extinguished hotspots in the last few days. One of the uncontained sections is in the southeastern appendages, which are inaccessible due to the steep rocky terrain.
The fire was a complete suppression effort, but on Tuesday the incident was handed over from a Type 3 team to a Type 4 team. This means less crew resources, but lightning fires have grown by only a few acres in the last two weeks.
The largest flame currently burning in Colorado is the Morgan Creek Fire. Officials said on September 15 that the lights sparking flames 15 miles north of Steamboat Springs were 7,509 acres, 24% contained. The fire grew only 4 acres in over a month.
Both Sylvan Fire (3,792 acres) and Muddy Slide Fire (4,093 acres) contain over 80% and require minimal activity. Each flame was caused by lightning.
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported a small flame on Monday afternoon. The Virginia Dale fire is already 25% contained and is estimated to be 25 acres in size. The fire is burning near the former Overland Trail Station and Stagecoach Station and near a small community in Virginia Dale.
Boulder’s National Weather Service warns that the risk of fire will increase later in the week.
