Bethesda, Maryland — Navy support official Bethesda (NSAB) said Wednesday morning that the threat urged the establishment of shelters for base personnel.
As of 1:00 pm, Walter Reed Bethesda still has a shelter installed. However, the NSAB commander immediately lifted shelters everywhere else, allowed gates 1 and 3 to open, and allowed only outbound routes.
The installed Walter Reed Bethesda Shelter was lifted on a building-by-building basis, and NSAB confirmed it on Twitter. People inside need to wait for further explanation.
The general public is urged to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
At around 8:45 am, the facility received a call from an anonymous source saying there was a bomb in or near Building 10. Security guards responded to the Bethesda 102 Woodroad site.
In a tweet, Navy support activity Bethesda said it was investigating the threat of bombs and the threat of active shooters. Later, the naval base said there were no signs of active shooters on the premises, but the threat of the bomb was still under investigation.
Navy Support Operations All Bethesda gates were initially closed for non-urgent traffic.
Navy Support Activities Bethesda is home to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Patients are advised to reschedule the appointment that was scheduled today.
The facility is also responsible for basic operational support for several tenant organizations, including the Military Radiobiology Institute, Navy Medical Leaders and Professional Development Command, and Soldier Recovery Brigade.
It is not clear how many people will be affected by shelters in the right places on campus.

In a tweet, the Walter Reed Medical Center stated that there was a danger and told all staff and beneficiaries to stay away from Walter Reed Bethesda. Walter Reed is also under the Shelter-in-Place Emergency Plan.
The Stoneridge School of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic school for all girls near Walter Reed, is also currently evacuating due to threats, according to the school’s communications department.
The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency has warned that serious traffic backups are possible on Rockville Pike in Cedar Lane, MD 355 on Jones Bridge Road, and Connecticut Avenue near I-495. The driver must use an alternative route during the blockage.
