The first called Denver police officer is currently facing a domestic investigation to find out why the case could not be fully investigated.

Brandon Sharp, 34, and William Holland, 40, were charged with one and two kidnappings by a Arapahoe County prosecutor. The other three so-called bounty hunters remain on the run.

Armed bounty hunter attacks apartment

The kidnapping took place on November 4, when five men in black and armed with guns identified themselves as bounty hunters and attacked a 25-year-old Jose Sarguero Martinez apartment in Aurora.

The group’s mastermind, the Netherlands, posted some of the crimes on Instagram under the handle of the FRA investigation, saying, “This guy has fled New York since 2015. Six years later, we’re here. . “

In the video, I hear a man telling a relative of Sarguero Martinez: It gets cold at night. I need a guy in a jacket, he will be with us for a while. “

You can hear a female relative of Sarguero Martinez asking, “So you guys will take him to the county, will the cops pick him up?” And one of the so-called bounty hunters replies, “We do everything.”

Victims demanded ransom at the hotel

According to the criminal affidavit, the so-called bounty hunter then took Sarguero Martinez to the Best Western Hotel. The hotel surveillance video shows Sarguero Martinez handcuffed into the hotel, with a black hood on his head, and suspected bounty hunters on both sides.

Upon arriving at the hotel, the Netherlands called Sarguero Martinez’s aunt and said she needed $ 1,500 to earn a bounty hunter. Otherwise, Sarguero Martinez will be handed over to the US Immigration and Customs Department.

According to the affidavit, the aunt went to her family and raised $ 1,500 and an additional $ 250, which the bounty hunter suddenly demanded to cover the hotel room, but the bounty hunter freed Sarguero-Martinez. Secure and the ICE warrant will be gone.

At that point, the family realized they were victims of the blackmail scam and reported to the Denver police. However, according to the Dutch arrest affidavit, when Denver police went to the hotel room and saw Sarguero Martinez with the kidnapper, “I didn’t see anything suspicious.”

Instead, the affidavit states: “The suspect created some kind of document stating that he was a bail bondsman who justified the DPD. After reviewing the document, the DPD left the area and did the same (to his aunt). I advised you to do it. “

After that, Sarguero Martinez was moved to the Radisson Hotel in Aurora. When Aurora police were contacted by Sarguero Martinez’s family, police officers contacted ICE’s supervisory detention and deportation officers, confirming that ICE “had no reason to order Sarguero Martinez’s arrest.”

“Thankfully, Aurora PD was able to contact one of my ICE executives to make sure this wasn’t the person we targeted,” said ICE Field Office Director in Denver. John Fabbricatore says.

In an interview, Fabbricatore said the ICE would never allow bounty hunters to break into an apartment, point a gun at it, kidnap someone, and detain them in a hotel.

“No, it’s not part of the immigration bond process. We don’t use bounty hunters,” says Fabbricatore.

When Aurora police arrived in the hotel room, they discovered that Sarguero-Martinez was “handcuffed to a waistchain secured with a combination padlock.”

Sarguero Martinez later heard police discussing what to do with him at some point, suggesting that “one of the suspects would only kill Sarguero Martinez.” Was denied by another suspect who said he could not kill him because he had a wife and children. “

Undocumented people vulnerable to blackmail

Bianey Bermudez, who belongs to the Colorado Immigration Union, said undocumented people are often afraid to seek help from police and are therefore more likely to be kidnapped for financial purposes.

“It’s terrible, but it’s not surprising,” Bermudez added, adding the failure of immigration reform, and to citizenship that can help millions of undocumented residents of the United States. The road is partly due to the abduction of Sarguero-Martinez.

“This is a direct result of how people are being exploited,” says Bermudez.

William Elenberg was a bail bondsman and said the Netherlands had done everything wrong when trying to enforce the arrest warrant.

“He (Netherlands) shouldn’t have touched him, he shouldn’t have knocked on that door,” Elenberg added with a bounty hunter and bail bondsman forced someone’s house to arrest him in Colorado. Not allowed to enter.

Elenberg said it was foolish for the Netherlands to post his alleged crime on Instagram.

“It was a nail in his own casket. He basically just showed everyone that he and his team were a lot of criminals,” Elenberg said.

Bounty hunters are already facing criminal charges

It was the Netherlands that was not obedient, and he should not have been in trouble while he was free to form a bond. The Netherlands was found to have six other pending criminal cases, including two previous cases in Arapahoe County, charged with impersonating a police officer.

Elenberg said he “apologized to his family” for failing to arrest the Netherlands in the kidnapping / extortion case.

Bermudez said the lack of Denver’s research “just shows how small and invisible our community is, and how we are unprotected.”

Fabricatore said it would have been nice if the Denver police had called his office from the beginning, as the Aurora police did.

“It would have been ideal if they had done so,” added Fabricatore. Work with your local law enforcement agency to prevent that from happening. “
