A Bradenton man has been accused of weapons carjacking after using a weighted battery for people over the age of 65 and a wine glass as a weapon in a carjacking attempt.
Before 5:30 pm on Monday, a Sarasota police officer responded that he had injured his battery at 1400 blocks on Sarasota’s 1st Avenue. The whistleblower told the dispatcher that Gavin Pierce, 30, grabbed two wine glasses from a nearby restaurant table, broke the glasses on the ground, approached a parked car, jumped in, and began attacking a 74-year-old man. I was in the driver’s seat.
The caller said Pierce jumped out of the car and ran off on his bicycle. When Sarasota police arrived at the scene, the victim was sitting in a sidewalk chair and was taken care of by bystanders.
The victim told police that he believed Pierce was trying to steal his car. The victim threw the key fob out of the car, and Pierce couldn’t take it. Victims chose to drive to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
Police officers in Sarasota quickly discovered Pierce near the intersection of Sarasota’s Fifth Avenue and the North Tamiami Trail.
Pierce was successfully transferred to Sarasota County Prison. He faces two felony charges, including a weighted battery and a weapon hijacking, against a person over the age of 65.
