According to athletic Pete Sampson, Brian Kelly contacted Notre Dame defense coordinator Marcus Freeman on Monday to join the Baton Rouge.

Freeman, who was the defense coordinator at Cincinnati from 2017 to 2020, was also targeted by LSU head coach Ed Orgelon last year, but instead set out for Notre Dame.

Freeman was a linebacker at The Ohio State University from 2004 to 2008, drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2009, and retired early after spending time at Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans due to poor heart condition. He returned to Ohio in 2010 as a graduate assistant.

Freeman coached linebackers at Kent State University in 2011, started as a linebacker coach at Purdue University in 2013, and was promoted to Defense Coordinator in 2016. Bearcats is the season No. 13 in total defense and 8th in scoring defense.

Kelly intends to make Freeman the most paid defense coordinator in college football.
