Broncos didn’t waste time identifying their guys on Friday night. They traded up to 35th Take North Carolina to a Javonte Williams running back.
He is being compared to Nick Chub. He is a downhill runner and it is difficult to tackle his body style. He rushed to 1,140 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, forcing 76 mistackles according to Pro Football Focus. Williams shared time with Michael Carter and Tar Heels, but it stood out. He’s a sturdy runner, 5ft-9, 212lb, 4.5 40 speeds, enjoys contact and isn’t afraid to separate with his stiff arms.
He believes he should have heard his name called because two running backs, Najee Harris of Alabama and Travis Etienne of Clemson, were in front of him on Thursday night.
“I think the running back in the draft is definitely the best. It was hard to sit there and see it,” Williams said. “But that’s my entire career and has been overlooked.”
Williams is expected to compete for play time as a reserve behind Melvin Gordon. Broncos signed Mike Boone following the release of Phillip Lindsay and has Royce Freeman on the roster. Boon can play special teams. Williams is considered an all-downback. He caught 25 passes and three touchdowns at 305 yards last season. That diversity said Broncos GM George Paton attracted Denver to him.
Broncos sent Falcons a fourth round pick and 40th Selected and received 35th Pick and 6th round, 219th Overall.
