Topeka, Kansas (KSNT) – The Kansas House has passed the budget of the Docking State Capitol and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment labs today.
The budget will secure $ 120 million for docking refurbishment. The exact procedure for the renovation will be decided at a later date.
Many of the 12-story, 64-year-old buildings are unemployed.
The budget also includes up to $ 65 million for KDHE Labs. Now near Forbes Field in Topeka, authorities said the department was in desperate need of an upgrade.
Part of that funding could come from the federal government, perhaps the Coronavirus Relief Fund, to support payments for laboratories that were frequently used during the pandemic.
New or refurbished labs must be in the Topika area.
Some lawmakers want the Kansas Museum of History to move to dock to create space for the KDHE Lab in the museum. Not only is the large cement wall attractive to lawmakers on the museum grounds, but the museum can also be located in the Parliament complex in downtown Topika. These decisions will be made at a later date.
Topeka representative John Alcala said that continuing those jobs in the community would be Topeka’s victory. He also said that fixing the docking would improve downtown.
“I’ve seen it go from its peak, and I’ve seen it go to some sort of deterioration over time, but investments are starting to happen. The old there For some of the buildings, people are buying them, so it will take some time to spend money to bring them back to standard, “Alcala said.
Some people, including Alcala, have not participated in moving the museum downtown. He said the office space from docking would be beneficial.
“I think it’s very important because we’re docking the money and it’s refurbishing all the existing floors,” he said.
The Senate will soon vote on the budget, after which Governor Kelly’s approval will be required.
