Tulsa, Oklahoma — While you’re back at school and shopping, you might want to leave your purchases in your car.
However, it may mean temptation for thieves.
We spoke to a robbery detective to get some tips on how to keep your valuables safe in your car.

“Sometimes I see people tend to leave things behind in their cars during Christmas time and other events when there is a lot of shopping, because it moves from business to business. It’s one of those target-rich environments for criminals to go find something to steal,” says Lt. Tim Means of the Tulsa Police Department.

Lt. Tim Means of the Tulsa Police Department’s Robbery Division says a pile of shopping bags in the back of your car can make it a prime target for thieves.

So, is there a way to safely leave your shopping bags in your car?

“The best thing I can say is, if you’re shopping, take your luggage with you, complete your shopping, and go to another place, put your luggage in the trunk before going to the next place,” says Lt. says Mr. meaning.

According to Lt. Means, thieves often check unlocked vehicles, but if they find something inside a locked vehicle, breaking the windows is fine.

So be aware of what you see inside the car, he says. Lt. Means says you should think twice about leaving your wallet behind before you go to the store, even if it’s under your seat.

His best advice for someone who might be tempted to leave their wallet in the car?

“If you’re not going to take it, don’t carry it. Don’t bring it. Just leave it at home. As long as you have a credit card that you can put in your pocket with your ID, that’s enough.” .”

But if you are the victim of a robbery, call the police first.

Then call your bank.

“Whenever you’ve fallen victim to losing that kind of information, cancel them as soon as possible so that these people don’t have the opportunity to earn a ton of credit on your credit card.”
