Worcester, Massachusetts. (WHDH)-Worcester’s teenage mother with autism says he stayed on the bus all day at school. Now the bus driver is absent from work.
Jennifer Reyes said she was incredible after her 13-year-old son Jamie, who doesn’t have a cell phone, was left alone on the school bus for six hours on Thursday.
“Yes, my kid was taken home, but if he didn’t feel like staying on the bus, he wouldn’t actually be at risk to me and go to school,” Reyes said. Said. “He was like I fell asleep on the bus, and I was on the bus all day. I never went to school.”
Reyes said he called the school-Central Massachusetts Collaborative-which confirmed that he was marked absent.
“The first thing that comes to my mind is that I don’t know food, water, or the bathroom for six hours,” she said.
Now she says she wants to know how this happened.
“I have two adults, a driver and a bus monitor, so I’m thinking about how to miss this in my head,” Reyes said.
The school is not within the system of Worcester Public School, but buses are operated by the district.
7NEWS spoke with the director who confirmed that the driver had taken leave. She says video surveillance has revealed that the policy of checking the bus thoroughly was not followed.
“In my opinion, it seems a good policy that it should prevent failure, but it failed,” Reyes said.
The district submitted a report to the Children and Family Department.
“When you are at work, at work, or have a contract that is responsible for the child of another person, be very careful and in the same way that you picked up the child. We need to make sure we take the child home, “Reyes said.
Unlike Worcester Public Schools, the Central Massachusetts Collaborative currently does not have a policy of calling parents when their children are absent, the school said the policy is currently being reviewed.
