HONOLULU (KHON2) — Business owners struggling to find workers are taking recruitment to another level.

There are restaurants that offer incentives to referrals.

It is not uncommon for employers to give staff referral bonuses.

At Gyotaku’s restaurant, customers can receive gift certificates of up to $ 1,000.

“Is there anyone who knows a better employee than you?” Owner Tom Jones told the customer.

He has just started an incentive program. Customers can receive a $ 25 gift voucher when they refer to the person who applied and interviewed. After three months, the customer will receive a $ 500 gift certificate. If a manager is hired, the customer will receive a $ 1,000 certificate.

With three gyotaku stores, he believes his customers will be a great recruiter.

“We serve more than 1,000 meals a day,” says Jones. “That is, our customers are probably the best people to recommend people who want to cook and serve in our restaurant.”

Some employers say the federal government’s $ 300 weekly unemployment insurance is added to state benefits, preventing people from returning to work.

Twenty-five states plan to opt out of it by next month.

When asked about Hawaii’s opt-out, Governor David Ige said money would contribute to the economy. But he plans to monitor how that additional benefit is affecting labor shortages.

“And if we think that many people are reducing work opportunities, we will consider quitting it at the right time,” Ige said.

Local economists say $ 300 is not the only reason for the labor shortage.

Parents need to find a daycare center to get back to work. The good thing is that the unemployed will also be able to find a job that suits them.

“If we can lead workers to better matching, it’s good for them,” said Sumner La Croix of the UH Institute for Economic Research. “It’s good for the economy. It’s good for their long-term income outlook.”

He points out that more people will return to work within the next two months.

Public schools start in August, so childcare isn’t a big deal.

Federal benefits will end on September 6.
