Business owners criticize state’s response time over reforming Department of Workforce Solutions – Albuquerque, New Mexico

Some New Mexico business owners, such as Curry Taylor, said these changes didn’t happen immediately and were worried that potential unemployment fraud would cost her money. ..

Taylor runs a real estate management company in Albuquerque. In the fall of 2020, she said she began receiving strange letters from the Labor Solutions Department claiming that her ex-employees lied about their employment. Last month she received a letter claiming herself.

“Well, owners won’t claim their company’s unemployment,” she said.

Taylor then learned another claim from someone who lied about working for her. The letter showed that this person could receive as much as $ 5,000 in a year.

Like many other business owners, Taylor became frustrated and tried to tell DWS that his claim was not justified. She said she made countless calls and sent so many emails.

“I’ve answered the phone a couple of hours before I actually had to go and work. I can’t contact anyone. I don’t know anyone who could get in touch with me by phone. “I feel like it’s a dead end,” she said.

Scams cause problems for business owners like Taylor. Because they can eventually force them to pay more to the state unemployment insurance fund.

“This can be a significant amount for a very small business that can’t afford it, especially in a pandemic that loses hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. I can’t afford it. I don’t know what to do, “she said.

A few hours before Taylor interviewed KOB4, she told her that the department had finally returned to her, suspended the complaint and flagged it as a fraud. She said she believed that the only reason they spoke to her was because they told them they were talking to a KOB4 reporter.

“But if other ordinary people can’t reach a particular person, how can they navigate the system,” she said. Her next goal is to ensure that her business is not punished.
