Business Owners Urge Mass. Not to Allow Cocktails to-Go to Expire – NBC Boston – Boston, Massachusetts

Massachusetts restaurant owners and advocates are fighting to continue selling takeaway cocktails while trying to recover from the pandemic. They say a temporary program Expirs next month Become lifesaver and they don’t want to see it go away.

Trina’s Starlight Lounge in Summerville offers takeaway cocktails that match all the colors of the rainbow. The restaurant invested time and money in bottling them and made a decent profit.

“It made us a lot of money, which really helped us make up for the loss of the year,” said managing partner Emma Hollander.

They don’t want to see take-away cocktails go everywhere, as there’s more to make up for.

“For us, we need to make as much money as possible and we need all the cents we can get. At this point, every penny is important,” Hollander said.

Nancy Caswell, owner of Orcs and Lone in Boston and Brine in Newburyport, agrees. She said it was important to maintain the program, especially as restrictions are beginning to be relaxed. Much of the industry still doesn’t know what the bar scene will look like.

“Who says they’re busy at full capacity and a few depths? We don’t know that,” Caswell said.

Their plea is part of why Senator Diana Disorio of D-Meshuen is fighting at Beacon Hill to extend relief measures for another two years.

“The move here is easy. This is common sense. Takeaway cocktails help increase revenue. Don’t leave one industry and give it to another. Simply these restaurants survive. It’s just helping out, “said Disorio.

The Massachusetts Package Association does not agree. They claim that this program puts their lives at risk and puts the state on slippery slopes.

“The emergency is over. It’s time to return to where it was before the emergency under Massachusetts alcohol law,” said Rob Melion, Group Secretary-General.

In addition to takeaway cocktails, restaurant proponents are also demanding that third-party shipping and patio caps be extended after June 15.
