Colorado Springs — The “Help Wanted” sign is found almost everywhere in the Pikes Peak area, and businesses and school districts are struggling to fill their positions.
“No one wants to work,” said Falk Kaiser, owner of Jasmine Flowers and Gifts in Colorado Springs.
The flower shop used to have 12 employees, but now it has to end up with 3 employees. Kaiser said he was looking for designers and drivers and his income was hit until those positions were filled.
“We can’t handle too many orders, so we need to minimize them,” Kaiser said.
They are not the only ones who are reducing. The district says the D49 continues to face a shortage of bus drivers, and if things don’t change, the school year will start with fewer routes and even cut most transportation for extracurricular activities.
“Almost all field trips have been significantly reduced because there are no drivers to drive the field trips,” said Jack Pietraaro’s D49 Transportation. “Usually it’s in the range of 70 routes, but now we’re starting this year with 58 routes.”
D49 has raised entry-level wages just to get people to work for them. Currently, the starting wage is $ 16.29 without the need for a commercial driver’s license. D49 drivers will receive a reward package that includes a contract deposit of up to $ 1,000 that begins when the CDL is obtained.
D11 Faced with a shortage of drivers, they hold employment fairs and constantly update their websites for potential new jobs.
“We are constantly facing a shortage of bus drivers at the beginning of the school year, and this year we are facing some serious shortages of bus drivers,” said Debra Ashby of D11.
