Chopper will arrive at Sanger’s division headquarters on Monday and will be based there until October.
The Type 2 Bell 212 is equipped with a fire attack tank capable of supplying 370 gallons of water and will only be placed at the fingertips of Fresno County, California Department of Forestry and Conservation when deploying air support.
Without a dedicated chopper, Fresno County would be at the mercy of all types of aircraft available in the event of an incident.
“Companies must be available. With these helicopters, it’s always difficult to track a fire because we contract with PG & E and other utilities,” said Curtis Wilcox, CALFIRE engineer. I will.
Choppers not only provide on-demand access to hard-to-reach rural areas, but also have the ability to transport hand crews as needed.
“Therefore, these harsh access lightning strikes could allow the fire brigade to board and board the fire brigade sooner than usual,” Wilcox said.
Due to the limited choice of water sources due to drought, pumps can be used to pull helicopter tanks out of shallower waters.
“This pump can go into an 18-inch hole, for example, and suck water into the tank,” Wilson explained.
After arriving at Sanger’s helicopter base on Monday, the chopper was immediately used to assist in a fire in the Orbury area.
“There are a lot of fires going on right now,” said Dan Urias, chief of Batalion. “We understand that drought and high temperatures can cause more fires. CALFIRE is ready for the future.”
It’s not the first fire season for CAL FIRE Fresno County to get a dedicated helicopter, but it’s not always easy to get a deal. There are only about 10 helicopter contracts across the state during the fire season, officials said.
